In 1994, the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills. The property was carefully selected and planted to 24 hectares of vines with the intent of producing premium wine. Proven varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted, as well as interesting varieties such as Zinfandel and Pinot Gris. In 1996, Nepenthe received approval to build its winery, only the second in the Adelaide hills at the time (the first being Petaluma in 1978).
In the backdrop of the cool heights of the Adelaide Hills, we started producing some soul reposing potions of our own: uncompromising wines of outstanding quality and internationally recognised distinction. Wines that, strangely enough, have been impressing both critics and consumers with their varietal faithfulness and subtle Adelaide Hills nuances.
Hahndorf German Village, here you may choose a place to dine and have wine or beer, from the German Arms, Hahndorf Inn or one of the Main Street food venues, we find that lunch here with a beer or a lemon lime and bitters is perfect between wine tastings.
The German history of Hahndorf can be traced back to 1838 when George Fife Angas, a director of a South Australian company, made a trip to London to promote colonisation. During his trip he met Pastor Kavel who was trying to help German Lutherans, being persecuted by the King of Prussia, to immigrate to safer places.
Petaluma was founded in 1976 on the simple belief that to make the best wine, you must plant the right grape varieties in the right regions. This is our 'distinguished vineyards' philosophy. Cabernet from Coonawarra, Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills and Riesling from the Clare Valley remain the basis of the Petaluma range to this day.
Shaw & Smith have created a great cellar door with a clever wine tasting menu. World class wines available here and great views.
Shaw and Smith Wines began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. Shaw and Smith had the clear vision to make exciting, refined wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills.
Today the team at Shaw and Smith specialise in making Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Pinot Noir, all that rank amongst Australia's leading examples of their respective varieties.
